PROLOGUE
INT. FELICITY'S DORM
(Felicity's Dorm. Felicity is sitting on the edge of her bed.)
Felicity: (sighs) Dear Sally...you should probably be sitting down for this. First of all, everything was perfectly fine. I mean, you know, on paper. High school was going exactly as it was suppose to.
(Cut to high school graduation ceremony. A cap and gown student walks to receive his diploma. The blue background has a logo suspended in the center which reads: "The Future is You.")
Felicity: I mean, in three months, I'd be at Stanford pre-med; then in four years in Stanford med school.
(Cut to close-up of student receiving his diploma)
Felicity: Then I'd start my four year residency at one of the Stanford hospital. My dad was thrilled. You know,
(Cut to Felicity waiting in line)
Felicity: Because he's basically had my life planned out for me since I was pretty much a zygote.
Principal: Claire Jessica Corman
(Cut to various shots of seated graduates)
Felicity: I was surrounded by people.
(Cut back to Felicity in line)
Felicity:Actually looking forward to their lives.
Principal: Benjamin Steven Covington
Cut to Ben walking proudly to receive his diploma. The audience applaud and cheer.
Cut to Felicity looking on with interest. Cut to Ben taking diploma, and he moves his tassel.
Cut back to Felicity.
Principal: Felicity Elizabeth Porter, graduates with honors.
Felcity walks proudly while looking in the audience for her parents.
Cut to parents. Mom and Dad stand up proudly. Mom video tapes Felicity, while Dad takes photos. Felicity takes her diploma from the principal and look out towards her parents while shaking hands with the principal.
Felicity: My parents reaction was typically understated.
Cut to Mom and Dad continuing to videotape and take photos.
Felicity moves her tassel to the left of her cap.
Cut to principal at the podium.
Principal: So on this day, undoubetly the most exciting of your lives, I urge you to savor the possiblities, embrace life, because these...
Cut to Felicity in thought.
Principal: ..days will not come again.
Audience applaud.
Felicity: They say crash victims. People who lose a limb---that they can still feel their missing arm or leg, even after it's gone.
Entire graduating class stands
Felicity: It's called phantom pain, right?
Graduating class throws their hats into the air. Felicity looks down and holds her hat.
Felicity: Well, suddenly, I had this horrible thought: What if high school went away, but the feeling of it didn't? I-I mean I didn't feel joy....or sorrow...or anticipation. Things were going so well, but all I could feel was...was dread.
Cut to Ben talking with his mom
Felicity: Three years ago, I held a pint of Ben Covington's blood.
Through a fence, Felicity walks by and looks on at Ben.
Felicity: I was volunteering at the 10th grade blood drive. That's about as close as we ever got. It's funny. Sometimes it's the smallest decisions that can pretty much change your life forever.
Ben: I never said that.
Ben's Mom: (off camera) I'm so proud of you.
Ben: (o.c.) Mom, y-you know, you know what? I cannot deal with this today! Not today! All right?
Mom: Fine.
Ben: Not today.
Mom: Fine. (walks off)
Ben starts walking off.
Felicity: (o.c.) Excuse me?
Ben stops next to Felicity.
Ben: Yeah.
Felicity: I'm Felicity Porter.
Ben: (shakes her hand) Yeah, I know. I'm Ben.
Felicity: Yeah, I know. I--(looks down at her yearbook) I was just wondering if, um, you would mind signing my yearbook.
Ben: I don't have mind with me.
Felicity: Oh, that's ok. I--here's a pen for you.
Ben: Thanks. (uncaps the pen in his mouth.)
Felicity: I just got it today, that's why, you know, there aren't any signatures...Except for, um, Mr. Johnson...who's here today somwhere, which I was surprised about. (nervous chuckle) Anywhere would be...great.
Ben: Can you give me just a minute...to do this?
Felicity: (confused) Oh, yeah. Yeah, sure...I'll.....
Ben sits down to finish signing the yearbook. Felicity looks around while she waits for him. She paces around him confused as to what he is writing, and she tries to sneak a peek. Nervously, she finally kneels down next to him and waits.
Ben: (hands her back the yearbook) Thanks for asking.
Felicity: Oh, ha, ha...good luck on you know---
Ben: (getting up) Yeah, yeah, yeah. You, too. I'll see ya.
Felicity: (laughs) Ok.
Ben leaves. Felicity opens her yearbook to read.
Felicity: So this is what Ben Covington wrote: "Dear Felicity, here it goes. I've watched you for four years. Always wondered what you were like...what was going in on your mind all the time that you were so quiet, just thinking, drawing in your notebook. I should've just asked you, but I never asked you. So, now, four years later, I don't even know you, but I admire you. Well, this makes me sound crazy, but I'm okay with that. So take care of yourself. Love, Ben."
Felicity looks up in shock at the words, and looks back down again.
Felicity: "P.S. I would've said 'keep in touch,' but unfortunately we never were in touch."
Ben is walking off.
Felicity: (o.c.) Hey!
Ben turns around.
Felicity: What are you going to college?
Ben: New York, what about you?
Felicity: That's pretty unclear.
Ben smiles and waves as he leaves.
Cut to a smiling yet deep in though Felicity.
Felicity: Suddenly, I knew what everyone else was feeling.
Cut to a pile of open mail slammed on a table. Felicity quickly rummages through it until she pulls out a letter from New York University.
Dad: (o.c.) How long has this been going on in your mind?
Felicity looks at it and runs off.
Dad: Could you have waited any longer to drop this bomb?
Felicity: I told you I decided today. I called them, and they said it would take extraordinary circumstances to admit someone at this late....
Dad: All right!
Felicity: ...date.
Dad: If you want to make this decision fine. But I *will* not, in any way, financially support it.
Felicity: Their sending the student - loans...
Dad: Loans?
Felicity:...and the student work forms with the late application.
Dad: I work this hard so you wouldn't have to go through what I did.
Felicity: *NO!* Dad, you made it so that I would have to go through *exactly* what you did. I know you want me to follow in your footsteps, but I just--basically, I *can't*!
Felicity's father leaves the room - mad.
Felicity: That was the *worse* summer of my life.
Door slams. Cut to New York. Car horns blaring. Felicity exits a yellow cab. She picks up her suitcases and crosses the street.
Walks up to H. Kevin Hall dorms.
Felicity: So basically, I've given up *everything* my parents *ever* planned for me. Everything I ever expected, all for a boy, I don't even know.
Felicity enters her new room. Looking around she sees her side of the dorm room. It is bare with your typical bed and nightstand. Felicity looks over to see her roommates side, and it is trashed.
Felicity: I guess, what I'm saying is...
Cut to Felicity sitting on the edge of the bed talking into a tape recorder.
Felicity: ...this all might be a *colossal* mistake as my dad would say. (chuckles) But on the other hand, it might...maybe it'll save my life or something. I don't know. Please respond, asap. I miss you. Love, Felicity.
Felicity ejects the tape and places it into a manila mailing packet addressed to: Sally Reardon.
Felicity sighs.
Cut to students waiting in line for their IDs. Felicity is looking through her papers.
Photographer: Next, please.
Felicity is gestured by the guy behind her, indicating it is turn.
Felicity: (to guy) Oh, sorry. Thanks.
Felicity heads toward the photo area.
Felicity: Hi. How are you?
Cut to photographer.
Photographer: Great. Just look at the dot, please.
Cut to Felicity.
Felicity:(nervous) Is my -- my hair a disaster? Please be honest because, I, uh, I'm gonna to have to live with this picture for the next four years. And that's a *really* long time.
Ben: (o.c.) Hey!
Felicity turns to look at Ben.
Ben: What are you doing here?
Felicity: (surprised) Hi! I'm -- this is -- I'm going -- this is where I'm going. I totally forgot you were going here.
Ben: That is so unbelievable. (kisses Susan. Points to Felicity) I know this girl from high school. This is Susan. This is -- uh... This is -- uh... Uh....
Felicity: (shocked) Felicity.
Ben: Felicity. Wow. All right, so, I'll see ya around? (leaves)
Felicity is shocked that he cannot remember. She looks off into space and forgetting about the importance of her ID photo. The camera flashes as the picture is taken.
Felicity: (o.c.) I, um...(in front of camera) basically haven't really had a lot of time yet to, uh, (cut to advisor's office) review the classes and schedules. I guess I just need a little time to catch up. Because, you know, there's a *lot* to consider now that, uh...I'm here.
Cut to advisor.
Advisor: I got a phone call from your parents. Your not the first student, whose parents weren't a 100% about their kid going to a particular college. They're, uh, concerned.
Cut to Felicity. She holds all her stuff tightly in her arms like a stuffed animal.
Felicity: They're more then concerned. They're insulted. So do you think my coming here was a bad idea, too?
Advisor: Well, really *only* you can answer that. But what I can tell you is that, uh, well, New York..the city, as well, as the university, can be a little overwhelming, and is often best suited for the independently minded student. And your parents seem to imply that you might not fit into that category. Do you have any specific interests outside of medicine?
Felicity: I -- I draw sometimes. I paint. I brought you some...(reaches down for her profolio) ..you know...some samples. (hands them to her advisor). (disappointed) For whatever it's worth. My parents said that?
Cut to Advisor, who does not give an answer. Back to Felicity.
ACT 1
INT. CLASSROOM
The professor closes the door and walks to the middle of the class.
Professor: When we get through with him, Alexander Pope will have become your favorite, diminutive, Catholic, English, Hunchback poet in the whole world.
Cut to Felicity, who is staring at Ben.
Professor: (o.c.) I been doing this a lot of years. And I know what's on a most of your minds right now. (cut to professor) So let me answer some the inevitable freshman questions. Or as I refer to them, the "FQ's." Yes, I'm going to.....(fades off)
Cut to Felicity, still staring at Ben. Felicity begins to whellup. Julie, sitting next to her, curiosily looks at her. Julie writes a note to Felicity and passes it to her.
Felicity reads it: "You okay?" Two checkboxes indicate: "no" and "I will be." Felicity smiles at Julie. Felicity checks: "I will be" and writes "thanks" at the bottom and hands her back the note.
Professor: (voice fades in) Breathe easy. Which is not to say that I haven't had the displeasure of handing out some incompletes over the years. But looking at this group,
Cut to Professor.
Professor: I'm confident that this will not be the case this year...
Julie write on the paper again and passes it back to Felicity. She opens it and it reads: "Is our teachers hair...on backward?".
Professor: (o.c) ...unless I'm wrong.
Felicity laughs and is joined in by Julie. Felicity tries to contain her laughter.
Cut to Professor.
Professor: And I've been wrong before.
Cut to Felicity and Julie. Julie laughs again and is joined in by Felicity.
Cut to cafeteria. Felicity and Julie are in line getting their lunch.
Felicity: It's just everything -- being in New York, you know, and trying to get my course schedule all figured out. It's just a little overwhelming, I guess.
Julie: God! It is *so* good to hear somebody else say that.
Felicity: It's difficult, right? Just figuring out the system.
Julie: You know the *only* two classes that I wanted were filled even by the time I got here.
Felicity: Yeah, I know. And I have this *really* mysterious roommate situation.
Julie: What do you mean?
Felicity: I haven't even met her yet. She doesn't sleep in our room. And she has these...these. these...bone sculptures. (leaves)
Julie: My roommate has this phobia. (follows)
Cut to Felicity. She sits down.
Felicity: Of what?
Cut to Julie. She puts her stuff down and sits.
Julie: Well, she cleans everything. *Everything* in the room smells like pine, it's disgusting.
Felicity: Come on.
Julie: I swear to God! She wears a face mask when she goes out. You might have seen her.
Felicity: That's crazy.
Julie: That's my point. You know, I know it's just college, but it's sort of terrifying, isn't it?
Felicity: It's terrifying.
Julie and Felicity laugh. Their attention is distracted by dished dropping. They turn their attention to the comotion.
Cut to a young man. He is looking down at his food which was just dropped. The people around his applaud.
Cut to Julie looking on at the scene
Julie: Oh, my God. That is *so* embarassing.
Cut to young man. He smiles and shrugs.
Julie: (o.c.) That is *so* something I would do.
Pan over to Ben sitting at a table. He makes a comment at the recent accident.
Cut to Felicity who looks at him with interest. Julie notices that Felicity is distracted by something else.
Julie: What are you looking at?
Felicity: I'll...be right back. (stands up) By the way, I'm Felicity. (extends her hand)
Julie: (accepts it) I'm Julie.
Cut to stairwell. Felicity and Ben make their way to the center of the flight of stairs and stop in front of a large window.
Ben: So what's going on?
Felicity: Um....I just want to preface this by saying, that, uh, I don't want you to feel weird about anything I am about to say. At all.
Ben: (smiles) Ok.
Felicity: Uh...the thing is...I came to New York...um...mostly because of you. (nervous laugh) Yeah, I had these, sort of, um..intenses feelings for you back in high school, and, uh, even though I know that we never really talked before graduation, except that one time when I, uh, was passing out flyer for the blood drive.
Ben nods his head indicating he does not know what she is talking about.
Felicity: Anyway, maybe the fact that we never did talk was why I had those feelings. Because now, of course, I realize, now that it was a crazy thing to do to follow someone I don't know 3,000 miles. And I sort of panicked about it, but I just wanted you to know that I'm past that. And I'm -- I'm totally ok with it now. I mean it, you know, because it's really not about you so much anymore. I'm here now, you know....uh...because...I'm here.
Ben chuckles.
Felicity nervously chuckles.
Felicity: So, uh, what are you thinking?
Ben: (exhales) I'm -- honestly? Honestly? I'm just -- I'm just -- flattered....
Felicity: (o.c) Good.
Ben: Flattered. By the whole thing, I'm flattered. I am.
Felicity: Good. That's really a perfect, perfect answer. Ok, so, uh....can we just be friends?
Ben: Yeah, sure.
Felicity: Great.
Ben: Of course. Yeah.
Felicity: Ok. (nervous laugh)
Ben leaves up the stairs, and Felicity watches him leave.
Cut to Felicity. In slow-motion, Felicity runs down a sidewalk, and she turns to run up some stairs. (Ivy: "I've Got a Feeling")
Felicity: Work study, isn't so bad really. I file student applications in the admissions office three hours, three times a week.
Cut to Felicity sitting down and reading a file next to a filing case.
Felicity: The one rule, the only real *serious* rule is to respect the confidentiality of the documents. Which mean, of course, that I'm not supposed to read them.
INT. FELICITY'S DORM ROOM
Cut to Felicity's dorm room. She is pacing around the room talking on the phone.
Felicity: Ok, well, Dad -- all right. I'm sorry. This isn't about what Uncle Harvey deeply feels I should be doing with my life. You know what? I have to go. I-I'm going to get off the phone, all right, you guys? Ok -- can I hang up now, please. Thanks. Good-bye.
She hangs up the phone and is startled by Noel standing in her doorway. She tries to cover herself with her phone.
Felicity: Sorry. Oh God!!
Noel: Ah. God. Sorry, I didn't mean to do that. Uh, Felicity, right? I'm Noel. I'm the R.A. I'm not a stalker. The resident advisor on the floor, room 729, at the end of the hall. Just, you know, stopping by to say, yo, and welcome and, uh...if there's anything you ever need, I'm kinda like the floor shrink. So just, uh, knock. Anytime, ok? Uh, and sorry about the scary part.
Felicity: That's ok. Noel: Ok. (leaves)
Felicity knocks on Noel's door. Noel opens it to see Felicity.
Felicity: Is now a bad time? (she enters)
Noel is calm surprised.
Felicity: I was consumed by tempation, which -- I-I've *never* been consumed by temptation before. And remember the essay question was, "What was the event that most changed your life?" right? I mean, so here was this chance to *really* learn a lot about this guy.
Noel: So, what, you read this college guy, Ben's application essay?
She hands him a photocopy of the essay.
Noel: You photocopied this college guy, Ben's application essay.
Felicity: Is that bad? Oh, just read it -- please.
Noel: (reads) "Uh, I never like my older brother. He was too well behaved. Too handsome. Too talented. Too much. Until I was 13, I lived like a cimmerian in perpetual darkenss. The darkness of Jonathan's shadow. In 1992...Jonathan died of brain cancer. (looks at Felicity)
Felicity sits down next to Noah. Felicity points to a section of the essay.
Felicity: Just, uh....skip down to there.
Noah: Uh, "And as I held the college application, it occured to me: although it was his dream, this was an act that Jonathan had never experienced. I had surpassed him simply by surviving. I was older then my older brother now. And there alone, in my room, I cried for Jonathan for the first time. I cried for the lost. I cried for the love I never knew I had.
Felicity: Here's what I need to know. Is it possible to be just friends with someone. I have these sort of immoderate feelings for, or am I doomed forever just to be in love, and ultimately, and I think, signifigantly hurt?
Felicity looks at Noah waiting for an answer.
Noah: Absolutely, you can be friends with Ben.
Felicity: Really?
Noah: Yeah, because, see your new here, alright, and your emotions are heightened, everything's heightened.. Everything, everything's so much higher then usual, right? So give it a month, and things will normalize, I swear! Ok, trust me. I'm the R.A.
Felicity laughs
Felicity: Ok, um, your right. Your right. (gets up and heads for the door, she turns) Thank you. Thank you, Noel.
Door closes
Noel: You're welcome, Felicity.
ACT 2
INT. CLASSROOM
Professor: (looking at a paper) I'm making an adjustment to the "George Curve." I'm concened that some of my initial comments.....
Cut to a student passing back papers.
Professor: ...along the lines of: "no one will fail this course," were taken a little to literally and a little *too* liberally.
Camera to her pans overs the students and to Ben, who looks at his paper with dismay.
Professor: By many of you -- you know who you are -- and now I know who you are. So, you will see a slight adjustment in today's assignment.
Cut to Ben, rising from his seat and leaving.
Felicity: (o.c.) It's amazing how much a person can change in two weeks. Noel was right, I mean, the old me would have never been able to let go of my expectations. I mean in terms of Ben.
Ben walks over to Felicity and Julie.
Felicity: When he asked me for help, he wanted to make sure, you know that I was okay with things, and that I wouldn't feel weird. Which, I thought, was really amazing.
INT. FELICITY'S DORM ROOM
Cut to Felicity's dorm room. Camera pans from behind her bed to reveal Felicity and Ben are sitting on the floor with books in their laps.
Ben: I cannot live....
Felicity: (thinking) So this is what it is -- we're becoming friends. Which I swear to God, I'm totally okay with. Surprisingly. (to Ben) What do you think she means by that?
Ben: Ok, um, we can look at life, as just life. Being alive...or maybe she means eternal life. Maybe she's talking about heaven? (looks at Felicity)
Felicity: (smiles) Yeah, I think that's right. I think...I think it's both.
Ben: (chuckles) Ok. (chuckles) How come you never went to any parties in high school?
Felicity: I.....went to a couple. Just in case you weren't there on awards day, I didn't exactly win most popular. Oh God, you did? Didn't you.
Ben covers his face.
Felicity: You actually won most popular.
Ben chuckles.
Ben: Yeah, well, those things are just stupid.
Noah knocks on the door.
Felicity: (looks towards the door) Come in.
Noel opens the door.
Noel: Hey. Hey. I got you this. (Tosses her a brown bag)
She catches it, and looks at Ben and then Noel.
Noel: It's a pocket guide to the subway. Sort of a survival thing.
She puts it to her side.
Felicity: Thanks. You didn't have to do that, but thanks.
Noel: Yeah, it was, uh...don't worry about it. So....ok...I'll see ya. (leaves)
Ben: Well, hey, I know we talked about studying for the review tomorrow afternoon, I can't. I got classes all day.
Felicity: Oh, um...wow..well...the review's Friday, um..
Ben: What? Do you want to do it tomorrow night?
Door opens. Felicity and Ben look to see who it is.
Noel: By the way, have you done the calendar yet or not?
Felicity: What?
Noel: Your doing the floor calendar for next month, right?
Felicity: Right, don't I have two weeks for that? This is Noel. (Point to Ben) This is Ben.
Ben:(smiles) How ya doing?
Noel: (short) Good. Thanks.
Ben: (short) Good.
Noel: I'm just making sure you were on top of it.
Felicity: I'm on top of it.
Noel: Ok.
Felicity: Ok.
Noel: All right. (leaves)
Felicity: (to Ben) I'm sorry.
Ben: "It's ok."
Felicity: Tomorrow night, I'm actually..um...I made plans with Julie.
Door opens. Felicity and Ben look up again, forcing a smile.
Noel: Uh, this was one was just to bug you. All right. Okay, my job's done. Bye-bye. (leaves)
Felicity gets up and locks the door. Ben laughs.
Felicity: You know what. Why don't you, Julie and I all go together.
Ben: Do you think Julie will be okay with that?
Felicity: Of course.
Cut to Felicity and Julie walking down a hallway.
Julie: You wanna know the scariest thing so far? I found my roommate doing my laundry.
Felicity: Who, the clean freak?
They walk to post office boxes. Julie: She didn't think my underwear was clean enough to be in the same room as her underwear. I'm applying for a room change.
Felicity: (reaching for her mail) Hey, so you know Ben from poetry? It's ok, if he comes along tonight, right?
Julie looks at her and continues to get her mail.
Felcitiy: What?
Julie: Nothing. No, I think I have a handle on it.
Felicity: On what?
Julie: The Blake poem, our assignment. I-I thought it was tough -- but
Felicity: Wait. You said you were desperate though.
Julie: Look, seriously, you guys go out. I don't want to be a fifth wheel. (leaves)
Felicity watches in shock. Quickly, she closes her mailbox, and follows Julie.
Cut to Julie. She is repeately pushing the elevator button.
Felicity: Julie, we're not going out. I mean, we're studying. And we all three need to study, right?
Julie: What is the deal with you guys? You and Ben --, are you dating or --
Felicity: No! Oh, no, we're just friends. I mean, we know each other from high school.
Julie: Oh. You guys went to the same high school?
Felicity: Yeah.
Julie: 'Cause I *really* thought that there was something going on.
Felicity: No. (laughs)
The elevator door opens.
Julie: I just -- I didn't want to be the one on the outside.
Felicity: Of course not. (enter the elevator) So, will you come, please?
INT. LUCKY STRIKE
At a table, Felicity, Julie, and Ben laughing.
Felicity: In his house!?
Ben: In his house? All of 'em, in his house!
Felicity: Wait. What about the guy, um, who gives his dog a bath?
Ben laughs
Ben: Right, and to dry it off he places it in the microwave. Yeah, that is the classic one of all time.
Julie: I heard it was a cat.
Ben: No, it was a dog.
Julie: Are you sure?
Ben: It had to be a dog.
Felicity watches both of them socialize. Julie: Cat.
Felicity: So anyway, do we know any others?
Ben: What about the one about the, uh, couple who go to Vietnam? You know that one?
Felicity: Your just full of them.
Ben: I got all them all memorized.
Julie: I don't like that one.
Felicity and Ben laugh.
Julie: That one. The Vietnam one. That's horrible. That's disgusting.
Ben: You don't know that one.
Julie: Ok. I'll be right back. (looks at Felicity) Will you get me another drink?
Felicity agrees. Julie leaves.
Ben and Felicity continue to laugh. They stop for and get serious.
Ben: (leans in) So I don't know how your going to feel about this.
Felicity: Feel about what?
Ben: Well...What we said the other day about being friends, remember that? I mean, I just wanted -- did you mean that? You meant what you said?
Felicity: (pauses)Um. Yeah. I mean...of course, I-I did. Why? What are you....?
Ben: No, it's just. Um...I'm kinda into Julie. And I just wanted to make sure it's ok.
Felicity awestruck
Ben: Oh, no.
Felicity: No. Oh! Oh! Oh!
Ben: I'm so sorry. I thought that you said that --
Felicity: Don't -- Don't -- No! I -- I -- there's nothing to be sorry about. I am -- actually that's *really* fine.
Ben: Are you sure?
Felicity: Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Ben: Well, what do you think? I mean, I can't -- I can't tell if she likes me or not. I can't tell from sitting here if I'm talking too much or what?
Felicity: (breathes) Um. I think, uh, that Julie thinks...you know....
Ben: What?
Felicity: (laughs) That -- that your wonderful.
Ben: Are you serious?
Felicity nods, and laughs.
EPILOGUE
H KEVIN HALL DORMATORY
A couple is making out in the hall. Felicity, with her head down, is walking down the dim lit hall. She enters her dorm room.
Cut to inside Felicity's dorm room. She is sadly sitting on her bed. Sirens are blaring outside. Her attention is interrupted by the door opening. Her roommate enters and heads straight for the closet. Felicity watches her as her roommate searches the closet.
Felicity: Um...hi. Are you Megan?
Megan: Yeah.
Felicity: Hi. I'm Felicity, your roommate.
Megan slings her purse over her shoulder. She stops to look at Felicity for a moment. A disgusted look forms on her face as she leaves. Despair consumes Felicity along with her sadness.
Cut to Felicity pushing a call button.
Sean: (tired) Hello?
Felicity: Ben?
Sean: No. It's Sean.
Felicity: Put Ben on.
Ben: Hello?
Felicity: It's Felicity. Buzz me up.
Ben: You think we can talk tomorrow?
Felicity: Ben...no!
A buzzer goes off. Cut to elevator opening. Felicity walks out and marches to Ben's door.
The door opens
Felicity: How could you write that in my yearbook?
Ben: What?
Felicity: "I've watched you for four years, always wondered what you were like." You wrote those words to me.
Ben: I thought I asked if you were okay with things.
Felicity: I was ok., but that doesn't mean you actions don't have consquences.
Ben: Oh, my actions. What actions are those?
Felicity: Oh c'mon. Even the slightest behavior means something. That's so obvious. It's like physics...nothing happens without an effect.
Ben: Well, I never took physics.
Felicity: No, don't say you *never* took physics. Because that's what you do. You -- you play innocent, and your charismatic, and you smile, and you get away with it, and you made me fall for you! And this is what's not fair. And you knew it, and you liked it.
Ben: What? Do I like that fact that you like me? Yes, of course, I do.
Felicity: When I told you I came here, you said you were flattered.
Ben: Flattered? No, I was awkward. I revealed the little of myself in your yearbook. And you change your college plans. I mean, what the hell are we talking about here?
Felicity: I know you better then you think I do.
Ben: Oh, you do!
Felicity: Yes. I know all about your brother.
Ben: What?
Felicity: I read your application essay. (proudly smiles)
Ben: You read my essay?
Felicity: Yes! I've done one questionably immoral thing in 17 years --
Ben: (enraged) No! No! Wait a second! How did you read my essay?
Felicity: How could you lead me on? You made me fall in love with you?
Ben: You know what!? Your acting crazy! All I did was be nice to you. I never asked you to come here. That was *your* choice, not mine! How can you think you're in love with me? You don't even know me!
Julie comes out from around the door. She looks at the both of them. Felicity is shocked.
Julie: (to Felicity) Hey.
Felicity: Hey.
Julie leaves. Felicity follows. Ben closes the door.
Sarah McLachlan: "Angel"
INT. OUTSIDE ADVISOR'S OFFICE
Cut to Advisor's waiting bench. Felicity sits waiting and thinking.
Felicity: I mean, if you think about the, uh, advantages and the disadvantages of, uh...
Spend all your life waiting
Felicity: ...being here,
Cut to Advisor's office. He listens to Felicity.
Felicity: ...compared then taking a semester off and -- and going back to Stanford...
For that second chance
Felicity: in the long run -- even in the short run --
For a break that will make it okay Felicity: I'll be ahead...you know, of the....
It's always one reason
Felicity: general, uh,
To feel not good enough
Felicity: I mean, s-staying here *really* would cost a fortune.
And it's hard at the end of the day
Felicity: And my dad was right, when he said that he worked really hard to keep me
I need some distraction
Felicity: from having to pay for college for like a decade after I graduate.
Oh...beautiful release
Felicity: you know, and, I should take advantage of that.
Memories seep from veins
Advisor remains silent
Let me be empty. And weightless and maybe
Felicity: And the financial aid office actually...said (exhales) that, uh, they would refund a portion of the semester, so.....
I'll find some peace tonight
Felicity: My parents are coming on Sunday. Which seems like pretty good timing don't you think?
In the arms of the Angel
Felicity: So I'm gonna just go back to Palo Alto,
Fly away from here
Felicity: and get back on track, you know, and become a doctor....And, uh, maybe save somebody else's life. Ok. Ok. Ok. Um (gets up)
From this dark cold hotel room. And the endlessness that you fear
Felicity: Thank you. For, uh...
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
Felicity: For your patience. I guess...You must think I'm a real basket case.
You're in the arms
Advisor: Look -- I, um--ahem. I got a chance to look over your portfolio. (hands her portfolio)
of the Angel
Felicity: (take profolio) Oh.
May you find
Advisor: And I'm not saying you wouln't make an exceptional physician, but...
Advisor: You're already an artist.
Some comfort here.
Felicity: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. (leaves)
So tired of the straight life, that everywhere you turn
INT. FELICITY'S DORM ROOM
Cut to Felicity's room. Ben knocks on her partially open door. He pushes it open. Felicity is folding her clothes into a suitcase. She looks to see Ben holding a manila envelope.
There's vultures and theives at your back.
He walks in.
The storm keeps on twisting
Ben: This was outside your door. (holds it out)
Keep on building the lie
Felicity takes it and looks at it.
That you make up for all that you lack
Ben: Must have been put in the wrong mailbox by mistake, which would be...pretty weird for the mailroom.
In the arms of the angel.
She pulls out a cassette tape and looks at it.
Fly away from here.
Ben: Who's it from?
From this dark cold hotel room
Felicity: My French tutor. She, uh....we worked together for years,
And the endlessness that you fear
Felicity: and....she was supposed to be married,
You are pulled
Felicity: but three months before her wedding her fiance was killed.
From the wreckage
Felicity: He was, um, on a motorcycle, and the guy who hit him was in a jeep.
Of your silent reverie
Felicity: Sally, sort of couldn't deal, so she moved away, just 'cause I guess she had too.
In the arms of the angel
Felicity: I've never been able to talk to anyone like I could talk to her.
May you find Felicity: So, instead of writing, I talk to her, and she talks back to me. And that's who that's from.
Some comfort here.
Felicity: I'm sure you felt the same thing when Jonathan died.
In the arms of the angel
Ben: Listen, I need to talk to you.
Felicity: I'm sorry about the other night. I---(exhales)
May you find
Ben: Maybe we could go up on the roof or something.
Felcity stops packing and looks at him.
Some comfort here.
Ben: Please.
She grabs her jacket and leaves.
Cut to rooftop overlooking the city
Ben: What I wanted to say to you. What I've been thinking about since you came to see me the other night, is the truth. And the fact is, Felicity, the thing I wanted to share with you is that (turns to her) I never had a brother, ever.
Felicity looks at him.
Ben: I mean, I had to write something, right? So I wrote all this --- well, you read what I wrote. And I wanted to tell you because....well, I don't know why I wanted to tell you. Because you provoke me, you know? You make me think about things, I never think about. Without even saying anything, just by the way you look at me. You want the absolute truth? One of the main reasons I wanted to come to New York was that....it was a pretty good chance of getting as far away from everything as possible -- my parents, my family, all that crap! And, yeah, on top of it, I-I lied to get in. So , basically, I'm a shallow loser. But I'm also very sorry that I'm not who you thought I was -- a guy you came so far to get to know because you thought he was so great and I'm not. What are you thinkin?
Felicity: (exhales) I've never made a substantial choice in my life, and that's why I came here. I thought it was you, but you were just really the excuse. When I came up to you at graduation, it was like a high, like a drug, because I'd never done something like that before. What I mean is that I wasn't fully sober, and so the irony of it is that the first real big decision I made turned out to be just...stupid. (chuckles) And embarassing....and...I guess, something that I'll look back on as regret. And that's that.
Ben: I just wanted to make sure that everything was ok with us, especially if you're leaving
Felicity: You didn't have to do that.
Ben: Yeah, I did. I can't wait to see this place when it snows.
They look out to the streets and drink.
INT. NOEL'S ROOM
Cut to Noel's room.
Noel is pacing. Felicity is sitting on his bed.
Noel: Ok. Ok. Ok. Here's....here's my speech. This is the big speech from Noel. Uh, you musn't leave this school. Why? Here why. Because this is -- this is a life struggle. This is fate. This is a challenge. I-If you turn away from this now -- you will and I promise you this -- be confronted by the same issue 5 years from now, or 10.
Felicity smiles
Noel: All right. You'll, you'll be the fancy doctor with...with the fancy practice. You'll, you'll be married, and you'll have like four phones lines in your home, and then, boom, it'll --it'll grip you like -- like a blast of freezing cold air. You know -- what the hell is my life? And you'll be able to trace it back to this instant. This - - this *very* moment, when that geek r.a. gave you these four words of advice -- Stay in New York or parish.
Felicity smiles
Noel: 5--6 words.
Felicity: Let me just, um....I just want to -- I, mean, you don't -- have...feelings for me...do you?
Noel: Me? Honestly?
Felicity: Do you?
Noel: Yeah.
Felicity looks away.
Noel: But..... (goes to sit next to her) If I could just give you one more bit of advice. Don't fundamentally disregard everything I've told you...just because of my affection for you.
Felicity looks at him
INT. CAFETERIA
Felicity is in line getting food. Julie walks up next to her in line. Julie looks at her. Felicity gives her a quick glance and turns away.
Julie: I'm so sorry. This is the last thing in the world I wanted. To hurt you. If I had known that you liked Ben. Felicity, I never, ever would have gone back to his place.
Felicity: It all, just...it seems really important right now.
Julie: You are my friend, ok? And that.... means more to me then you probably think. I'm not going to see him again, ok?
Felicity: It doesn't matter. I mean, I'm leaving anyway, so....(walks off)
Julie is saddened.
Elegant resturant.
Felicity sits at a table with her parents
Peter: We realize we over-reacted.
Mom: Especially Dad.
Peter: Especially me. And when you think about it, so did you. A little. Anyway, obviously we've gone over this ad infinitum -- and that's why were here.
Mom: Amnesty.
Peter: Now you've missed the first quarter at Stanford, but that's no tragedy. And we're *very* flexable on what we're proposing here, but the general idea is this: you come home this week, next week, we cover every expense. We'll even take care of that loan. And you'll start at Stanford in January.
Mom: If you take a couple extra courses, you can make up the lost credits by June.
Peter: Yeah. Then, we're right back on schedule, and you got to see the world a little, and find out what you really wanted was what you already had.
Felicity: What if they don't let me in?
Peter: Oh, I already took care of that.
Mom: Sweetie, I went by the registration office and picked up your packet. (hands it to her)
Felicity: What do you mean, "took care of it?"
Peter: Oh, I made a few calls. Had a few lunches. Like in the fall.
Felicity stares at her father
Mom: The point is and, and I think you're being very mature about this. You made an implusive decision, and it was a mistake and now we're going to fix it.
Felicity: What did you do in the fall?
Peter: When you were accepted the first time. I made a few calls. I pulled a few strings.
Felicity: I didn't know that.
Peter: Oh! Last but not least.
Mom reaches into her purse
Peter: You can have mom's car.
Mom puts the keys on the table in front of Felicity. Felicity looks at the keys and then at her father
Peter: And when you get back, we'll all get together and we'll look at some apartments and see if there's anything we all can agree on. What do you say?
Felicity picks up the keys and looks at them. Her thumbs brushed over the "panic" button. She pushes it.
Felicity: I guess the thing is....that...if I made a mistake, then at least -- it was mine. You know.
Her mother looks concern.
Peter: Heh. Uh. Uh, no I-I don't know. What does that mean?
Felicity: It means that -- I-I think I have to stay. (lays the keys back on the table)
Her mom is saddened.
Peter: (exhales) But wait a minute. Wait a minute. You were about to agree to this.
Felicity: I know, but -- but that would have been a - a pretty implusive decision, right? And, um, I just -- I don't think it would be the best thing to do.
Peter: (anxious) But it is! It is the *best* thing to do right now.
Felicity: Well, I just -- I really think I should give it some time, you know? I mean....(exhales) I really can't wait to see what the city looks like when it snows.
Mom: (in disbelief) Snows?
Peter: All right, if-if you do this, if you decide to do this, and make this -- colossal mistake and stay, that's it. We're not gonna bail you out next time.
Mother is still stunned
Felicity: Well, um, I guess that's a decision that's you'll have to make.
Felicity and her father look at each other intensely. Her father exhales and shakes his head in disbelief.
Cut to Felicity standing at a corner waiting for traffic to clear. She walks.
Sally: (voiceover) Dear Felicity, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. It's been a real struggle in Sante Fe. I guess when you heart gets broken, you sort of start to see the cracks in everything. I'm convinced that tragedy wants to harden us, and that our mission is never to let it. Two weeks ago, I was going to move again. I was all packed: I was going to start all over somewhere new. That morning I received your first tape from college. I just sat there in my little apartment listening to your voice, crying like a baby. Suddenly, you were tutoring me.
Felicity walks up to Julie. Julie turns to see Felicity. They talk and hug.
Sally: I guess, I'm learning little by little that we decide what our lives are gonna be. Things happen to us. But it's our reactions that matter. I just want you to know, I think you've made a *really* great choice. And I can't wait to hear what happens.
Felicity and Julie walk down the street into the crowd.
The End
